Why pattern repeat and directional fabric matter

Most fabric calculators pretend fabric is plain. They are wrong for about one third of sewers. A fabric with a large floral print that repeats every 12 inches means you cannot cut a random piece from anywhere on the bolt and expect the pattern to match at seams. If you have four pieces in a row, the pattern aligns when all four start at the same point in the repeat cycle. That means the third and fourth pieces are wasted fabric where the repeat does not line up with the cutting line.

Directional prints (stripes, pictorial designs, anything that has a clear up-and-down) must all face the same way. You cannot rotate a piece to fit the space. This cuts your effective yardage by roughly 20% because you skip half the rows to keep everything facing the same direction.

The calculator above adds 0.5 times the repeat length for every 1 to 2 yards ordered, and reduces your piece yield by 20% for directional prints. These are conservative estimates; if your pattern is very large or your design very fussy, order even more.

When you buy fabric, the measurement on the label is the full bolt width. After trimming the selvage (the finished edges that prevent fraying), you have less usable width. Here is what you actually have to work with.

Usable width varies slightly by manufacturer and fabric type. When in doubt, measure your fabric after trimming selvages. The calculator above uses 42" for 44" bolt, 52" for 54" bolt, and 58" for 60" bolt as working estimates. Adjust downward if you need extra margin for errors.

When to add extra yardage for pattern alignment

Pattern repeats are printed on the fabric bolt end or listed by the supplier. Use this chart to determine how much extra to order for pattern matching. The rule is conservative: you can often use less if you are careful, but better to have fabric left over than to run short.

Worked example: A 60x80 inch quilt with patterned backing

You want to make a 60 by 80 inch quilt with a large floral patterned backing (18-inch repeat, not directional) and matching 2.5-inch binding.

Backing fabric calculation: Your quilt is 60 by 80 inches. Quilts need a backing 8 inches wider and longer than the quilt top (4 inches on each side for quilting movement). So backing is 68 by 88 inches. Your fabric is 44 inches wide (42 usable after selvage). Divide 88 by 42 = 2.1, so you need 3 widths (each width is 44 inches, one yard is 36 inches long). Three yards of 42-inch-wide fabric gives you 126 inches of length, which covers 88 inches plus extra.

But you have an 18-inch pattern repeat. Add 18 inches for one full repeat to ensure seams align. Revised total: 3.5 yards of backing.

Binding calculation: Quilt perimeter is 2 (60 + 80) = 280 inches. Add 20 inches for seams and joining = 300 inches. Divide by 40 inches per strip (standard width of fabric after selvage) = 7.5, round to 8 strips. Each strip is 2.5 inches wide, so 8 x 2.5 = 20 inches, or 0.56 yards. Round to 0.75 yards to be safe.

Total fabric to order: 3.5 yards backing + 0.75 yards binding = 4.25 yards, or 4 and 1/4 yards.

Common questions

What is usable width and why does it matter?

Usable width is the actual fabric you can cut, after selvage edges are removed. Standard quilting cotton is 44 inches bolt width, but only 42-43 inches usable after trimming selvages (the tightly woven finished edges on each side that prevent fraying). Using bolt width instead of usable width in your calculations means you'll cut fewer pieces than you plan for, or run short on yardage.

How do I calculate extra yardage for pattern repeat?

Find the pattern repeat measurement (usually marked on the fabric bolt). Add the vertical and horizontal repeats together. For every yard of fabric needed, add an extra half-repeat to ensure you can align patterns at seams. A fabric with a 12-inch repeat means every 1.5 yards ordered should have 6 inches of extra length to work with pattern matching. Directional prints require 20% extra yardage as a general rule of thumb.

How many pieces can I cut from one bolt?

Divide your usable width (42-43 inches for standard quilting cotton) by the width of your pieces. Round down to whole pieces. Then divide the bolt length by your piece length to find how many rows you can cut. Multiply pieces per row by rows to get your total. Pattern repeat and directional fabric reduce this number because you must skip portions to align the design.

What is the difference between straight and bias binding?

Straight binding is cut parallel to the grain of the fabric and uses less yardage. For a 60-inch by 50-inch quilt requiring 260 inches of binding, you need 7 strips of 2.5-inch width, which equals 17.5 inches or 0.5 yards. Bias binding is cut at a 45-degree angle across the grain, requires slightly more yardage (approximately 15% more for the same quilt), but stretches around curved edges and corners more smoothly.

How do I account for shrinkage and mistakes?

Add 5-10% to your final yardage calculation to cover cutting errors, fabric shrinkage after pre-washing (varies by fiber content, but 2-5% is typical for cotton), and minor pattern matching adjustments. For beginners or complex pattern matching, adding 10-15% is safer.
